Twitter opens the photo service third API alludes to other media down the line

It has been two and a half months Twitter first unveiled their own photo service, in partnership with Photobucket. Just last week, they finished rolling out to all users. Today, they take the next step: opening it up to third-party developers.

They just announced Twitter developer blog, there is a new API to Upload photos, which is ready for developers outside the company to play around with. While many third-party Twitter services have uploads a photo for a while, they often use their own method for doing this, or more player like TwitPic or yFrog. With the new API, they will be able to download, store, and use the image on the Twitter servers, combined with Photobucket.

If you've used OAuth echo image is loaded, you will find that post statuses/update_with_media new method is easier and requires less dependencies. One of the first things you notice about this method is the name of the site: status updates with the media can be performed only on upload.twitter.com and not api.twitter.com. Using the name of an alternative site to download path provides high availability and flexibility.

Also unfortunately, animated GIFs are not supported. Actually, thank goodness.

Twitter also notes that services photos "soon" Join Twitter mobile clients, but there is no time to share "yet. Methinks he will be ready sometime prior to iOS 5 beginning this fall, which relies on it.
